What Is Turtle Cave/Cove?

Kauai’s turtle cove is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. Every year, thousands of people come to see the turtles that live in the cove. The turtles are a protected species, and the cove is their natural habitat. In addition to being a home for the turtles, the cove is also a beautiful place to visit.

The water is crystal clear, and the coral reefs are teeming with life. Visitors can snorkel or kayak in the cove, and there are also plenty of places to relax on the beach. Whether you’re looking for adventure or just want to enjoy a day in paradise, Kauai’s turtle cove is sure to please.

Getting To Turtle Cove

This location does have public parking and access, but like most destinations in Hawaii, it’s always best to get there earlier to secure a spot. You may also park at the Queen’s Bath road to access Turtle Cove.

Keep in mind the trail can be a bit treacherous when the waves are really high, as the trail follows a rocky coastline. There are also no lifeguards at this location.

Respect The Wildlife

While it is important to respect all of the creatures that call Turtle Cove home, turtles are particularly vulnerable to disturbance from humans. Turtles are easily startled, and if they feel threatened, they may retract into their shells and become stressed. This can cause them to stop eating and eventually die. If you see a turtle at Turtle Cove, please give it space and do not try to touch it. By respecting the wildlife at Turtle Cove, we can help ensure that this special place remains a home for turtles and other creatures for years to come.

These rules apply to all of the wildlife you see while enjoying your time in Hawaii!

Keep An Eye On Conditions

Because of the location of Turtle Cove, it can experience sometimes dangerous conditions, especially during the winter months when Kauai’s surf is much rougher.

Ask the locals, check the surf report, and be confident in your hiking abilities. As always – good footwear is important.

If the rocks you are walking on are wet or darker than the surrounding rocks, that means the surf has been hitting that high up recently. Stay away from wet rocks to prevent getting swept into the ocean by waves.

Depending on when you visit you may see people playing in the surf and rocky pools. These are almost always locals who are familiar with ocean conditions and the surf. Don’t be a copycat if you value your safety.
